Misinformation about the coronavirus has been spreading at least as fast as the virus itself.

Fake news and conspiracy theories have been going viral for weeks and have been spreading uninhibited over social media at a rapid pace. In addition to the pandemic triggered by COVID-19, the WHO speaks of a related “infodemia”. In times of crisis, the need for information naturally increases – the local media is seeing a rise in news audiences for TV, radio and newspapers. Newspapers and magazines have recorded a significant increase in readership, both in print and online (or via apps) - just over 50% of Austrians turn to a newspaper for information.* Anyone who wants to protect themselves from fake news can obtain reliable information through quality journalism. Especially now, trusted news sources are more important than ever before. “The currently increasing demand for and high use of Austrian newspapers and magazines confirms the socio-political role that the media as information service providers plays – these days, the objective and well-founded reporting has been repeatedly acknowledged by the government as an indispensable contribution to serve the public interest”, says Gerald Grünberger, managing director of the Association of Austrian Newspapers (VÖZ).

In an extensive print and online campaign, VÖZ aims to educate through an initiative supported by quality journalism. “Fact not fake” is the message of the campaign that DEMNER, MERLICEK & BERGMANN created: “Uncertain times call for secure sources of information. That is why newspapers and magazines provide you with everything you need to know now, 24/7, in print and digital. Stay healthy and informed,” VÖZ now reminds everyone of the importance of media quality in the fight against misinformation.
